The Biggest Styling Mistakes I See (And How to Avoid Them)
I've styled women for weddings, black-tie galas, race days, milestone birthdays and just about every special occasion you can imagine.
And after thousands of styling appointments over the years, I've realised something.
The women who always look the most stylish aren't necessarily wearing the most expensive dress or the latest designer label.
They're simply avoiding a handful of common styling mistakes.
The best part?
Every single one of them is easy to fix.
Here are the biggest styling mistakes I see and how to avoid them.
1. Wearing Shoes You Can't Walk In
This is probably my biggest one.
I'll see someone in a stunning dress. Their hair is beautiful. Their makeup is flawless.
Then they take their first few steps.
They're wobbling, they're uncomfortable, they're constantly looking down and adjusting their feet.
Immediately, the confidence disappears.
It doesn't matter how expensive your outfit is, if you can't walk naturally, people notice.
The good news is that you don't need sky-high heels to look elegant anymore.
There are so many beautiful block heels, lower stilettos and pointed pumps available that are just as sophisticated as a six-inch heel.
I remember one customer who came into the boutique wearing a gorgeous pair of towering stilettos she'd bought especially for a wedding. She looked incredible standing still, but the moment she started walking you could tell she was uncomfortable.
We paired her dress with a lower block heel instead.
The transformation was instant.
She stood taller, walked confidently and couldn't stop smiling. She even admitted she was looking forward to dancing rather than worrying about how long she'd last in her shoes.
That moment has always stuck with me.
Confidence will always look better than discomfort.
If you're going to be on your feet for six or seven hours, walking, mingling and dancing, choose the shoes you'll still be smiling in at the end of the night. Your feet (and your future self) will thank you.
2. Buying the Size You Wish You Were
This is something I still see almost every day.
Someone will try on a dress that's one size too small and immediately say,
"I'm usually an 8."
Or...
"I don't wear a 12."
Here's something I wish every woman knew.
Nobody is looking at your size label.
Nobody.
What people do notice is when a garment fits beautifully.
A dress that's the correct size will skim your body, move properly and flatter your shape.
A dress that's too small pulls across the hips, sits incorrectly and often makes us look larger than we actually are.
Sizing varies enormously between designers, so don't become attached to the number on the tag.
Wear the size that makes you look and feel incredible.
That's the only size that matters.
3. Forgetting the Finishing Touches
I'm actually guilty of this myself.
For years, I hardly wore jewellery.
If I remember my wedding rings, I am doing well.
Recently, some beautiful friends gifted me a pair of stunning gold cuffs from Camilla and Marc, and they've completely changed my perspective.
Sometimes one beautiful accessory is all an outfit needs.
You don't need to pile on jewellery.
A statement cuff.
A pair of elegant earrings.
A delicate necklace.
The right clutch.
These finishing touches make an outfit feel complete without overpowering the outfit itself.
4. Dressing for the Trend Instead of Your Body
Just because something is trending doesn't mean it's the right choice for you.
Fashion should work for you, not the other way around.
One of the biggest parts of our styling appointments is helping women find silhouettes that suit their body shape, lifestyle and personal style rather than simply following what's trending on social media.
The women who always look effortlessly stylish usually know exactly what works for them.
5. Wearing the Wrong Undergarments
This is one of the easiest styling mistakes to fix.
Visible bra straps.
Ill-fitting bras.
Incorrect shapewear.
Underwear lines.
The right foundation garments allow your dress to sit exactly as the designer intended.
It's often the difference between a dress looking good and looking exceptional.
6. Choosing Accessories That Compete with the Dress
If your dress is making the statement, let it be the hero.
Beautiful earrings, a classic clutch and elegant heels are often all you need.
Every accessory should complement your outfit rather than compete with it.
When in doubt, simplify.
7. Wearing the Wrong Outfit for the Occasion
This is something that's easily avoided but surprisingly common.
I've seen guests arrive at relaxed winery weddings dressed for a ballroom gala, while others have worn cocktail dresses to black-tie events.
The best-dressed guest isn't always the one wearing the most elaborate outfit.
It's usually the one who looks perfectly suited to the occasion.
The venue, dress code and time of day should all influence what you wear.
When everything feels appropriate, you'll naturally feel more comfortable and confident.
8. Forgetting to Steam Your Outfit
This might sound like a small detail, but it makes a huge difference.
Even the most beautiful designer dress can lose its impact if it's creased.
If you're travelling with your outfit, unpack it as soon as you arrive and give it a quick steam, even if it's just hanging it in the bathroom to let the steam work its magic.
It's one of the simplest ways to instantly elevate your look.
9. Buying an Outfit Without Thinking About the Whole Look
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people falling in love with a dress without thinking about everything else they'll need.
What shoes will you wear?
Will you need a coat?
What bag works best?
What jewellery suits the neckline?
What hairstyle complements the dress?
Thinking about your entire outfit and not just the dress creates a polished, effortless look.
My Biggest Piece of Styling Advice
If there's one thing I've learnt after years of dressing women for weddings, races, black-tie events and milestone celebrations, it's this:
Confidence is always the best thing you can wear.
Not the highest heels.
Not the smallest dress size.
Not the trendiest handbag.
Wear clothes that fit properly.
Choose shoes you can actually walk in.
Add a few thoughtful finishing touches.
And most importantly, wear something that makes you feel like the very best version of yourself.
Fashion should never wear you.
The right outfit should simply let you shine.
