There’s something powerful about slipping into an outfit that feels effortless, no straps, no distractions, just you feeling completely confident. And sometimes, the secret behind that flawless look isn’t the dress itself… it’s what’s underneath.

From the very beginning of Your Secret Closet, I’ve always believed that the right outfit has the ability to transform not just how you look, but how you feel. Confidence comes from feeling supported, comfortable, and completely at ease in what you’re wearing.

And over the years, one styling essential I keep coming back to, especially for those beautifully cut, backless, or daring silhouettes is breast tape.

When used correctly, it’s truly a game changer. It allows you to wear pieces that might otherwise feel “too hard,” giving you lift, shape, and support without compromising the design of the garment. It’s one of those quiet styling details that makes everything come together seamlessly.

But like anything in styling, it’s not just what you use—it’s how you use it.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Taping (The Way I Do It)

This is exactly how I guide our clients in-store, simple, considered, and designed to make you feel confident from the moment you put your outfit on.

Step 1: Start with a clean canvas
This is completely non-negotiable. Your skin needs to be clean and dry, no moisturiser, oils, or shimmer. These break down the adhesive and will cause the tape to lift throughout the night.
If you want a little extra assurance, wipe the area with micellar water and let it fully dry. Think of this as your foundation for everything that follows.

Step 2: Plan before you place anything
Before you even peel the backing, take a moment to look at your outfit.
Where is the neckline? How much lift do you want? How much coverage do you need?

Pre-cut all your strips first. This keeps the process calm and intentional rather than trying to figure things out mid-application.

Step 3: Shape your strips properly
A small detail that makes a big difference, round the corners of every strip.
Sharp edges are the first place lifting starts, and this simple step helps everything sit more smoothly against your skin.

Step 4: Create your base (especially for fuller busts)
If you have a fuller bust, I always recommend starting with a horizontal strip underneath the breast.
Think of it as a hidden support layer it distributes weight more evenly and takes pressure off the lifting strips you’ll apply next.

Step 5: Apply your lifting strips
Now for the lift.
Take your strip and anchor it underneath the breast first. From there, gently lift upwards to your desired position.

Here’s the key (and where most people go wrong):
Stretch the middle of the tape to create lift, but leave the first and last few centimetres completely relaxed.

This prevents pulling, discomfort, and that overly tight feeling later on. The result should feel supportive, not restrictive.

Step 6: Check your posture before securing
Once you’ve lifted and positioned, stand upright and look straight ahead before pressing the top down.

Most people instinctively look down while taping, but this changes your natural shape. You want to see yourself as others will see you (and how you’ll look in photos).

Step 7: Repeat and refine
Add additional strips as needed, depending on your outfit and desired shape.
This isn’t about perfection, it’s about balance and feeling comfortable in your final look.

Step 8: Activate the adhesive
Once everything is in place, press and hold each strip firmly for 10–15 seconds.

The warmth of your hands activates the adhesive, helping it bond properly to your skin. Don’t rush this, it’s what ensures your tape lasts all day (and night).

A Few Final Thoughts (From Me to You)

If you’re wearing breast tape for an event, always do a trial run a few days before. Try it with your outfit, take photos, move around, and see how it feels after a few hours. Styling should never feel uncertain on the day—it should feel effortless.

And when it comes time to remove it, be gentle.
Soak the tape with body oil, let it sit, and slowly peel it away while applying more oil underneath. It’s about caring for your skin the same way we care for every garment at Your Secret Closet, with patience and respect.

For me, fashion has always been about more than just what you wear. It’s about how you feel when everything comes together, when nothing distracts you, and you can simply enjoy the moment.

Breast tape is just one of those small, thoughtful details that helps make that happen.

Because when you feel supported, comfortable, and completely yourself, that’s when confidence becomes effortless.
