For me, it happened in the fitting room of a Melbourne department store.
People often ask me why I started Your Secret Closet.
Most assume it's because I've always loved fashion.
They're right, but that's only part of the story.
The truth is, Your Secret Closet wasn't born because I wanted to hire beautiful dresses.
It was born because of the way I wanted women to feel, and how i wanted to feel.
Fashion has always been part of my life.
If you asked my family, they'd probably tell you I've been obsessed with clothes for as long as they can remember.
Growing up in the country town of Euroa, one of my favourite days each month was catching the train to Melbourne. I'd spend hours wandering through boutiques, discovering new designers and seeing what was arriving for the season ahead. Looking back, saving money was never going to be my strongest skill, but my love for beautiful fashion was already well and truly taking shape.
Even while studying Psychology at university and later working with people living with acquired brain and spinal injuries, fashion never really left me.
Friends were constantly borrowing clothes from my wardrobe or asking what they should wear to weddings, birthdays and special occasions.
I didn't realise it then, but I was already doing what I love most today, helping women feel confident in what they wear.
Then life took me to London.
After working in aged care, I experienced burnout and knew I needed a change.
That change came in the form of a job with Monsoon/Accessorize, and looking back, it reminded me of who I was.
It reignited my creativity.
It reminded me how much I loved styling.
But more than anything, it taught me what exceptional customer service really looked like.
Every garment was beautifully cared for.
Every display had purpose.
Every customer mattered.
I learnt that great fashion retail has very little to do with selling clothes.
It has everything to do with making people feel seen.
Those lessons have stayed with me ever since.
When I returned to Melbourne, I went back into healthcare while continuing to watch the fashion industry evolve.
People were becoming more conscious about sustainability.
Fast fashion was everywhere.
Designer dress hire was beginning to emerge.
Then came the moment I'll never forget.
I was searching for a dress for an important event and walked into a well-known department store expecting a premium experience.
Instead, I found beautiful designer dresses dragging across dirty floors.
One dress had a marked hem.
Another was badly creased.
Another looked like it hadn't been cared for in weeks.
Finding someone to help was difficult.
And when I finally did, the conversation felt transactional rather than personal.
I walked out without buying a thing.
Not because I couldn't find a beautiful dress.
Because I couldn't find an experience that made me feel excited about wearing one.
I remember driving home thinking:
Surely shopping for a special occasion should feel just as special as the occasion itself.
That single thought became the beginning of Your Secret Closet.
I wanted to create a boutique where every dress was treated with care.
Where every customer received honest styling advice.
Where women never felt pressured into choosing something that wasn't right for them.
Where customer experience mattered just as much as the designer labels hanging on the racks.
Fashion should never make women feel intimidated.
It should make them feel confident.
Comfortable.
Beautiful.
Excited.
That's still the philosophy behind every appointment we have today.
