How to Look Expensive in a Hire Dress - Without Spending a Fortune

There’s a big difference between wearing an expensive dress and looking expensive.

And after ten years of watching women try on designer dresses, I can tell you the price tag has surprisingly little to do with it.

I’ve seen beautiful designer dresses look completely wrong because the fit wasn’t right. And I’ve seen a relatively simple dress look absolutely incredible because everything the fit, shoes, hair and accessories just worked.

The secret isn’t spending more.

It’s choosing better.

So if you have a wedding, birthday, formal, black-tie event or the Spring Racing Carnival coming up, here are the things I think make the biggest difference.

1. Fit Comes Before Everything Else

I will say this forever: the right fit matters more than the label.

A $1,000 dress that pulls across the hips, gaps at the bust or constantly needs adjusting will never look as polished as a beautifully fitting dress that costs half the price.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is women becoming fixated on the number on the tag.

Forget it.

Designer sizing is wildly inconsistent anyway.

You might be an 8 in one brand, a 10 in another and occasionally even a 12. Nobody at your event knows what size is written inside your dress and nobody cares.

What they notice is whether it fits.

Look for a dress that sits properly through the bust, defines you in the right places and allows you to move comfortably.

If you spend the entire night pulling it up, pulling it down or sucking your stomach in, it isn’t the right dress.

2. Fabric Makes an Enormous Difference

One of the reasons I love Australian designer labels is the attention many of them give to fabrication and structure.

A beautiful crepe, heavy satin, quality lace or structured fabric tends to sit differently on the body. It photographs beautifully and often gives an outfit that polished, elevated look people associate with luxury.

But here’s the important part:

Expensive-looking doesn’t have to mean embellished.

Sometimes the simplest dress in the room looks the most sophisticated.

A beautifully cut black gown with almost no detail can look far more expensive than something covered in sequins, feathers and embellishment.

Which leads me to my next point…

3. Don’t Try to Make Everything the Statement

Statement dress.

Statement earrings.

Statement shoes.

Statement bag.

Statement makeup.

Statement hair.

Please don’t.

There should be a hero.

If the dress is dramatic, let the dress do the talking.

If you’re wearing an incredible floral print or sculptural silhouette, you probably don’t need huge earrings, a sparkling bag and an elaborate shoe competing with it.

On the other hand, if you’re wearing a beautifully simple dress, that’s when you can introduce a stronger shoe, earring or bag.

The outfits that look the most expensive are often the ones where somebody knew when to stop.

4. Choose the Right Silhouette - Not Just the Dress That’s Trending

This is a big one.

Instagram and TikTok can convince us that we need a particular dress because we’ve seen it on twenty different people.

But the dress of the moment isn’t necessarily your dress.

Your proportions matter.

Your height matters.

Your bust matters.

Where the waistline sits matters.

And most importantly, how you feel in it matters.

I’ve had customers come into Your Secret Closet absolutely convinced they want one particular dress they’ve seen online, only to try something completely different and instantly realise it’s the one.

That’s why I always say: don’t shop for the photo of the dress. Shop for the dress on you.

5. Get Your Underwear Right

Not glamorous, but incredibly important.

The wrong bra or underwear can completely change how a dress sits.

Visible lines, bra straps, shapewear cutting in at the wrong point or a bra that changes the position of your bust can all affect the silhouette.

If you’re coming in to try dresses for an event, bring the underwear you’re likely to wear.

And if the dress doesn’t allow you to wear your normal bra, think about that before you commit.

There is nothing luxurious about spending six hours worrying whether your tape is still holding everything in place.

6. Shoes Can Make - Or Break - the Whole Look

You don’t necessarily need expensive shoes.

You need the right shoes.

The wrong shoe can instantly make a beautiful designer dress feel less polished.

I usually look at proportion first.

A delicate dress often works beautifully with a refined heel. A stronger or more architectural dress can carry something bolder.

And don’t underestimate a simple shoe.

A clean nude, black, metallic or white heel can often make an outfit look much more sophisticated than something overly detailed.

Also: if you can’t walk in them, don’t wear them.

Walking confidently into a room will always look better than wobbling in a pair of 12cm heels.

7. Racing? Your Millinery Should Look Like Part of the Outfit

Spring Racing is where accessories can go wrong very quickly.

Your hat or headpiece shouldn’t look like something you remembered to add five minutes before leaving the house.

It should feel intentional.

Look at the shape, colour and proportions of your dress first, then choose millinery that complements it rather than competes with it.

This is exactly why we love having Wendy Scully Millinery available in store — being able to try the complete look together makes such a difference.

Sometimes the headpiece you thought would work isn’t the one. And sometimes adding the right one completely transforms the dress.

8. Hair and Makeup Should Complement the Dress

Again, you don’t need more.

You need cohesion.

If your dress has a beautiful neckline, consider whether wearing your hair up will show it off.

If the dress is romantic and feminine, softer hair and makeup might work beautifully.

If the dress is sharp and structured, a sleek ponytail or bun can completely elevate the look.

I always think the best hair and makeup makes you look like the best version of yourself not like somebody else.

9. Steam the Dress!

It sounds ridiculously obvious, but it deserves its own section.

Creases will cheapen even the most beautiful designer dress.

Give yourself enough time to prepare properly. Steam the dress, check the straps, check the hem and make sure everything is sitting exactly as it should before you leave.

Five minutes of preparation can make an enormous difference.

10. Stop Thinking You Need to Own It

This is probably the biggest shift.

There was a time when looking incredible at an event meant spending hundreds, sometimes thousands on a dress you might wear once.

It doesn’t anymore.

That’s exactly why I still love dress hire after ten years.

You can wear beautiful Australian designer pieces for a fraction of their retail price, enjoy them for your event and then send them back.

No dress sitting in the wardrobe.

No guilt because you spent $800 on something you’ve worn once.

And no pressure to wear the same dress to the next three events just to justify buying it.

Hire gives you the freedom to choose the right dress for this particular occasion.

And I think that’s far more luxurious than simply owning something expensive.

The Final Rule: Confidence Is What Makes It Look Expensive

I know this sounds like a cliché, but I see it every week.

You can tell when someone has found their dress.

Their posture changes.

They stop analysing every tiny part of their body in the mirror.

They start smiling.

And suddenly they’re not asking, “Does my stomach look okay?”

They’re asking, “What shoes am I wearing with this?”

That’s the moment.

Looking expensive isn’t about wearing the most expensive dress in the room.

It’s about choosing something that fits beautifully, styling it thoughtfully and feeling completely comfortable wearing it.

So forget the price tag.

Find the dress that makes you look and feel incredible.
